The artist, Clarence Mills was born in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii as a member of the Eagle Clan. His Haida name, "Gahghinskus”, means “Out of your own land”.
Mills began studying traditional Haida art at the age of eighteen and he has since produced carvings in argillite and wood, including totem poles for international events, as well as glass totems, engraved jewelry, cedar and glass bowls, and limited edition silk-screened prints. His work reflects his beliefs that the Haida tradition should be preserved and communicated around the world.
Mill's work as a multi-disciplinary artist connects people with the powerful energy and images of his Haida heritage, land and its creatures. He incorporates traditional Haida subjects of the Raven, the Bear, the Eagle, the Beaver and others in his totem poles.
Clarence is a pioneer in applying traditional Haida images onto glass. His totem poles, for which this smaller glass version represent, have been displayed internationally at Expos, universities and at museums around the world.
